We have grouped our projects into five categories: DOD, DOE, Industrial, Petroleum, and Dry Cleaners. For a summary of our case histories in each category, please select from the menu just above. Roll over the map to view our range of experience in each particular state.
DOD Projects – COLUMBIA has successfully performed projects on dozens of Army, Navy, and Air Force sites around the country using our array of direct sensing tools and SmartData Solutions® for optimizing all phases of the field work and reporting. Our focus on high-quality, cost effective subsurface assessments along with out Veteran owned status and extensive experience with Performance Based Contracting and Triad projects has made our firm a natural match for assessments of petroleum and solvent spills on military bases. Our teams know how to get in, get the job done right the first time and provide professional, high-resolution imagery to the base for communicating actual site conditions to the regulators, the community and the command for reliable and timely decision making. COLUMBIA has worked on the following sites:
- Army Bases: Redstone Arsenal, Rock Island, Savannah, Aberdeen, Edgewood, Phoenix, Mechanicsburg, Richmond, Media, Walter Reed, Richey, Detrick
- Navy: Quantico, Kings Bay, Brunswick, Newport, Parris Island, Charleston, Corpus Christie, Dallas, Portsmouth, Oceana, Norfolk, Indian Head, Little Creek, St Juliens Creek, Quantico
- Air force: MacDill, Dover, Bolling, Tyndall, Moody, Andrews, Wright Patterson, Charleston, Arnold, F.E. Warren, Warner Robbins, Lincoln
DOE Projects – One of the Department of Energy sites where COLUMBIA's SmartData Solutions® system proved instrumental in defining the mass of the DNAPL was the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky. Working on DOE sites requires compliance with very high levels of security, safety and documentation. COLUMBIA's sophisticated SmartData Solutions data management system was key to ensuring high levels of quality assurance, data processing and visualization. At Paducah, the deeper regional aquifer is difficult to penetrate and as a result had limited information available about the source and extent of DNAPL. COLUMBIA was successful in providing high-resolution data throughout this zone that was then available for establishing the mass that required remediation. Contact Ken Davis with PRS @ 270-441-5049.
Industrial Projects – Health and safety and professional performance are very important considerations on many chemical and other industrial facilities. COLUMBIA’s crews are certified by many of the Fortune 50 firms for operating on their sites. On one site in Knoxville, Tennessee, the investigation had to be conducted inside an operating plant with very little room for maneuvering equipment. The goal was to find the source of groundwater and soil contamination and provide sufficient detail for a cost effective design for remedial action. The goals were achieved under these difficult conditions because of the power of the SmartData® Solutions system for statistically directing the investigation. Petroleum Projects – COLUMBIA has conducted assessments at hundreds of petroleum stations, refineries and terminals nationwide. A good example of this work was a spill investigation performed for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in Old Town Alexandria. The site was a former terminal that will be redeveloped into residential townhouses. Our teams worked along a very busy street in the middle of winter. The MIP survey delineated the nature and extent of petroleum that had migrated along several different utility pathways. The evolving conceptual site model was updated daily throughout the field phase of the project using SmartData Solutions® allowing the land owner, the state and the USEPA to keep posted on the progress of the investigations and the decisions that were being made. Contact Randy Chapman at Virginia DEQ @ 703-583-3816.
Dry Cleaner Projects – The Membrane Interface Probe is ideally suited for the mapping of chemicals that have migrated from dry cleaner sites. When this technology is optimized and managed via SmartData Solutions® it becomes a very effective tool for quickly locating the source and extent of solvents in the subsurface soils and waters. One site in Orlando, Florida delineated the subsurface conditions during a four day field phase. Sufficient high resolution data was collected and processed into a detailed site model for a highly focused remedial design to be constructed. Contact Ben Brantley of Ensafe @ 901-372-7962.
